Let me guess…Is your prosthetic creaking?
Or, squeaking?
And, I bet you don’t know how to fix it?
You are not alone!
I am right there with you as it happened to me!
I found myself one day with my prosthetic foot on the ground...two feet behind me!
It fell off!
I didn't know what to do. So, I found an Allen wrench that luckily was the right size to put my foot back on.
Whew!
I don't want this to happen to you.
If your prosthetic is making strange noises, is loose or coming apart, let me shed some secret sauce on how to maintain, fix and repair your prosthetic when an emergency happens.
(Let me add a disclaimer here…
Always see your prosthetist when anything is wrong with your device!)
Listen and Check for Loose Parts. Pay close attention at all times to your prosthetic and what’s going on with it. Listen for noises that can be indications that somethings wrong.
Check for loose bolts, screws and parts that seem to be not working right. Your prosthetic is a device and just like anything else, things can get loose or undone making it not function properly.

Make a habit of daily checks of your prosthesis for parts that need attention. They may need everything from adjustment, tightening or even replacement.
Doing this will hopefully help you avoid any mishaps that could harm you or damage your prosthetic.

Don’t be shy to contact your prosthetist to make any adjustments if you are unsure of what you are doing.
Upkeep on your Liner. Your liner is the key tool in keeping you and your prosthetic healthy. Simply cleaning your liner daily is essential in prosthetic care.
Why?
Your gel liner is the first defense against protecting your limb to prevent health issues. It is connecting you and your prosthetic, and the movement and close contact with your skin can cause damage or tears.
Make sure you clean your liner every day by cleaning with soap and water and turning the liner inside out to dry. Once its dry turn it right side out, getting it ready for another day and use.
Look for Cracks. Cracks can appear when you least expect. Cracks or breaks can jeopardize the integrity of your prosthetic putting you at risk of hurting yourself.
Keep an eye out for any cracks or breaks that show themselves from daily use. Most prosthetics are very tough but daily wear and tear can take its toll on even the strongest.
Make a daily habit of going over your prosthetic and check for cracks and breaks. If you discover a crack don’t attempt to repair yourself.
Oh, and one last thing!
Don’t ignore even the smallest break or crack, plus, If you see a rash, burn or wound on your skin seek emergency help.
Use common sense and if you find something wrong with your prosthetic…
See your prosthetist ASAP!
